Add mods to your V Rising server in two ways: with our Thunderstore.io automatic installer from the game panel, or manually by uploading BepInEx plugins over FTP. Both methods are shown below with videos.

V Rising server mods: read before installing
Important warning! Read before installing any mods: server modding best practices.
- Always try to install 1 mod, configure it, test it, and once it works, move to the next mod. Installing 30 or 40 or more mods at the same time usually just causes problems: if 1 of the mods is outdated, broken or needs dependencies to run, it breaks all other mods, nothing works, and it is much harder to find the problem mod.
- Always read the mod instructions or the installation tutorial included. Some mods need extra steps to work.
- Always read the mod description and warnings. Some mods need other mods as dependencies to work.
- Always try to understand if the mod is still updated and working. Some mods are outdated and don't work anymore. Mods that haven't had an update for a long time are more likely to not work correctly.
- If you are going to use the Thunderstore.io automatic installer, DO NOT INSTALL BepInEx or HookGenPatcher as mods. They are not mods, they are plugin loaders and patchers. Install them from the Mod Manager button. Installing them as a mod will break your server.
Method A: install mods using our Thunderstore.io automatic installer
For this example we use the QuickStash and Guardian2 mods:
- QuickStash: https://v-rising.thunderstore.io/package/Elmegaard/QuickStash/
- Guardian2: https://v-rising.thunderstore.io/package/ACP/Guardian2/
- Stop your server.
- Go to the Mod Manager button and install BepInEx from the Frameworks category.
- Go to the Configuration Files button and edit the
Valheim.modsfile with the Text Editor option. - One per line, add the end of the mod link, starting after the
package/part. For example:Elmegaard/QuickStash/andACP/Guardian2/. Write them exactly like that or they will not work. - Press the ThunderStore.io Mods button and wait for the mods to install.
- Start your server to generate all the configuration files. The configuration files are inside the
BepInEx\config\folder.
Your mods file then looks like this:
Elmegaard/QuickStash/
ACP/Guardian2/
Warning! Mod installation side notes: some plugins come with their configuration files inside the plugin folder. Find those configuration files inside BepInEx\plugins\PLUGINNAME\

Method B: install mods manually from other sources
For this example we use the Guardian2 mod from NexusMods:
- Guardian2: https://www.nexusmods.com/vrising/mods/4
- Find the mod you want to use on ThunderStore.io, NexusMods.com or any other source (in this example NexusMods.com), download it to your computer and unzip it.
- Connect to your server FTP following this guide: How to connect to your server FTP.
- Inside your server FTP, navigate to
\BepInEx\plugins\and upload the folder that contains theplugin.dllfile. - Start your server to generate the plugin configuration file. The plugin configuration is inside the
\BepInEx\config\folder.
Warning! Mod installation side notes:
- Some mods contain more than the
plugin.dllfile: all files need to be uploaded. - Some mods have the
plugin.dlland other files inside subfolders when you unzip them (a folder inside a folder inside another folder). Always upload just the folder that contains the files. - Some plugins have no folders: when you unzip them, the files are outside of a folder. You can upload those files directly to the
\BepInEx\plugins\folder, or create a folder with the name of the plugin, put the files inside and upload that folder for better organisation. - Some plugins come with the configuration files in the zip file. Configure the plugin using those configuration files.

V Rising mod questions
How do I add mods to my V Rising server?
Stop your server, install BepInEx from the Mod Manager, then either list the Thunderstore.io mods in the mods file and press the ThunderStore.io Mods button, or upload the plugin folder to \BepInEx\plugins\ over FTP. Start the server to generate the configuration files in BepInEx\config\.
Why did my server break after installing mods?
Usually one mod is outdated, broken or missing a dependency, and it stops the other mods working too. Install 1 mod at a time and test it. Also check you didn't add BepInEx or HookGenPatcher as a mod: they are loaders and patchers that belong in the Mod Manager.
Where are the V Rising mod configuration files?
Start the server once after installing a mod. Its configuration file is then created in the BepInEx\config\ folder. Some plugins keep their configuration inside their own folder in BepInEx\plugins\.
