Quick answer

For your first mechanical boss, wear Adamantite or Titanium armour for the class you play. They have the highest defence you can make before the fight (49 to 50 for melee), and their set bonuses suit boss fights. Frost armour is a good alternative for melee and ranged builds, and Necro armour is the cheap ranged option from before Hardmode. Once you've beaten one mechanical boss you get Hallowed Bars and can craft Hallowed armour. The numbers below come from the official Terraria wiki.

The three mechanical bosses at a glance

You summon each one at night (7:30 PM to 4:30 AM in game time) with a crafted item: the Mechanical Eye for The Twins, the Mechanical Worm for The Destroyer and the Mechanical Skull for Skeletron Prime. There is no required order. Health values from the wiki:

BossHealth (Classic)Health (Expert)Health (Master)
The Twins (both eyes combined) 43,000 64,500 82,238
The Destroyer 80,000 120,000 153,000
Skeletron Prime 28,000 42,000 53,550

Each boss drops 15 to 30 Hallowed Bars, and the wiki says any one of the three is enough to get them. Plan your fight for the night: The Twins flee and despawn if they're not dead by dawn, and Skeletron Prime becomes far deadlier after dawn, behaving like a faster Dungeon Guardian. Version 1.4.5 also changed one thing about that fight: an enraged Skeletron Prime in daytime can no longer be dodged by accessories.

Armour sets compared

These totals use the best helmet for each class, from each set's page on the wiki:

Necro (before Hardmode) 19 +10% ranged critical strike chance
Mythril 37 melee, 27 ranged, 24 magic Melee: +10% critical strike chance. Ranged: 20% chance to save ammo. Magic: 17% reduced mana cost
Orichalcum 42 melee, 30 ranged, 27 magic Flower petals fall on your target for extra damage
Frost (made from Adamantite or Titanium bars) 43 +10% melee and ranged damage, and your hits inflict Frostbite
Titanium 49 melee, 34 ranged, 30 magic Attacking generates a defensive barrier of Titanium shards
Adamantite 50 melee, 36 ranged, 32 magic Melee: faster melee and movement. Ranged: 25% chance to save ammo. Magic: 19% reduced mana cost
Hallowed (after one mechanical boss) 50 melee, 35 ranged, 31 magic, 27 summon You become immune after striking an enemy. The summoner hood adds 2 minion slots

Best armour before your first mechanical boss

Adamantite or Titanium

Both are made at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil. A full Adamantite set (helmet, breastplate, leggings) costs 12 + 24 + 18 bars for the helmet, breastplate and leggings, so 54 bars with one helmet. A Titanium set with one helmet needs 59 bars. Adamantite gives a little more defence and speed, while Titanium's shards add defence when you attack. Pick the one whose ore your world has.

Frost armour

Each Frost piece needs Adamantite or Titanium bars plus a Frost Core. It gives 43 defence and a damage bonus for both melee and ranged, so it suits a hybrid build, but it costs you the class-specific helmet options.

Necro armour for rangers

Necro is the budget option: 19 defence, but it's available long before Hardmode. It's crafted from bones and cobwebs, with the full set giving +15% ranged damage and +10% ranged critical strike chance. Use it if you need a ranged set quickly, then swap as soon as you can afford Hardmode metals.

Mythril and Orichalcum

These are the stepping stones. If you haven't unlocked Adamantite or Titanium ore yet, Orichalcum's 42 melee defence is a fair stopgap for a first boss attempt, but expect a harder fight.

After your first mechanical boss: Hallowed armour

Hallowed armour needs 54 Hallowed Bars for a full set with one helmet (12 for the helmet, 24 for the plate mail and 18 for the greaves), crafted at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil. The set bonus makes you immune after you strike an enemy, and the summoner version adds two minion slots. It gives 50 melee defence, the same as a full Adamantite set, so the main reason to switch is the set bonus and the summoner hood.

Tips for the fights

  • Build an arena. A long, flat strip with platforms lets you kite. The wiki's advice for The Twins is a long flat arena with mobility boots and ranged weapons.
  • Kill one eye first. For The Twins, finish one eye before heavily damaging the other. The wiki suggests Spazmatism first because of its Cursed Flames in the second phase.
  • Use weapons that hit many segments on The Destroyer, and clear the Probes it releases.
  • Go for the Prime Laser first on Skeletron Prime, since its ranged attacks are the hardest to avoid.
  • Bring potions. Regeneration, Ironskin and a damage buff, plus Greater Healing Potions (the bosses drop them too), make a big difference. A Daedalus Stormbow, a 20% drop from Hallowed Mimics, fires arrow volleys and works well for rangers.

Fighting the mechanical bosses on a server

Mechanical bosses are a good group fight: one player can pull attention while others use ranged or summoner builds. On a Terraria server your world stays online between sessions, so whoever is on can set up the arena and summons.

Terraria mechanical boss armour FAQ

What is the best armour for the mechanical bosses?

Adamantite or Titanium for most players, and Hallowed armour once you have beaten your first mechanical boss.

Which mechanical boss should I fight first?

There is no required order. Many players start with the one whose mechanics suit their build, such as Skeletron Prime with its lower health, but any of the three drops Hallowed Bars.

When can I summon the mechanical bosses?

At night, between 7:30 PM and 4:30 AM, using the summoning item for each boss.

Is Frost armour better than Adamantite?

For defence, no: Adamantite has 50 melee defence to Frost's 43. Frost's set bonus adds damage and Frostbite, which some players prefer.
