Quick answer
Animal and creature mods for current Minecraft do exist, but they are not the ones most older lists name. The classics (Animania, Mo' Creatures, Zoo and Wild Animals, Better Animals Plus) stopped at old versions between 1.12.2 and 1.20.1, and Mowzie's Mobs stops at 1.21.1. For Java Edition 26.x, the seven mods below all had a 26.x build when we checked. They are Java mods: they need Fabric, NeoForge or Forge, and they don't work on Bedrock or on Realms.

Last updated 9 October 2026. Checked against Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock 26.x. Mod versions below were checked on 9 October 2026 on each mod's own Modrinth page. Mods change often, so look at the page before you download.
Animal and creature mods that run on Minecraft 26.x
This is what each mod's page listed on 9 October 2026. "Both sides" means the mod has to be installed on the server and on every player's game.
| Naturalist | Fabric, NeoForge | 2.0.6 for 26.2 (28 Sep 2026) | Both sides |
| Alex's Mobs Continued | Fabric, NeoForge, Forge | 2.2.2 for 26.3, Forge for 26.2 (18 Sep 2026) | Both sides |
| Friends&Foes | Fabric/Quilt, NeoForge | 5.0.1 for 26.3 (8 Oct 2026) | Both sides |
| Mutant Monsters | Fabric, NeoForge | 26.3.1 for 26.3 (6 Oct 2026) | Both sides |
| Ecologics | Fabric, NeoForge | 2.7.1 for 26.3 (6 Oct 2026) | Both sides |
| Cosy Critters & Creepy Crawlies | Fabric | 0.3.3 for 26.2 and 26.3 (7 Jul 2026) | Your game only |

The seven mods, one by one
Naturalist
Adds 47 animals, with 66 variants, to your world, with their own behaviours and drops (that is how its Modrinth page describes it). It has over 11 million downloads on Modrinth. Naturalist on Modrinth. Checked 9 October 2026: the newest Fabric and NeoForge builds are tagged 26.2. Practical note: install it on the server and on every player's game, and match the Minecraft version to the file you download, so a 26.3 server may need to wait for a 26.3 build.
Alex's Mobs Continued
The original Alex's Mobs, by AlexModGuy, stopped at Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge. This is an unofficial continuation of the same mod, which its page says keeps the same content: around 116 animals and monsters, each with its own model and behaviour, with nothing rebalanced. Alex's Mobs Continued on Modrinth. Checked 9 October 2026: 2.2.2 for Fabric and NeoForge on 26.3, and for Forge on 26.2 (there was no Forge build for 26.3 yet). Practical note: pick the file that matches both your Minecraft version and your loader, and install it on the server and on every client. Don't use the original mod on 26.x: it will not load.
Friends&Foes
Brings back mobs that lost the community mob votes, such as the Crab, Glare, Moobloom, Iceologer, Rascal, Tuff Golem and Wildfire, and adds vanilla-style features around them. Fabric/Quilt page on Modrinth, Forge/NeoForge page. Checked 9 October 2026: version 5.0.1 for 26.3, published as two projects: one for Fabric/Quilt and one for Forge/NeoForge (the second lists a NeoForge build for 26.x). Practical note: download from the project that matches your loader, and install it on both sides.
Mutant Monsters
Not an animal mod, but a popular creature one: mutated versions of the Zombie, Skeleton, Creeper, Enderman and more, each with strong attacks and its own reward, plus items you can craft from what they drop. Mutant Monsters on Modrinth. Checked 9 October 2026: 26.3.1 for Fabric and NeoForge, published on 6 October. Practical note: the mutants are hard. On a shared server, tell your players before you add it, and take a backup first.
Ecologics
Updates vanilla biomes with new mobs, blocks and more while keeping the vanilla look. One example from its page: coconut trees on beaches, where a Coconut Crab can pop out of a fallen coconut. Ecologics on Modrinth. Checked 9 October 2026: 2.7.1 for Fabric and NeoForge on 26.3. Practical note: it adds blocks and items as well as mobs, so install it on both sides, and remember that new biome features only appear in chunks you haven't explored yet.
Cosy Critters & Creepy Crawlies
Adds small atmospheric animals: flocks of birds, moths that gather around lights, and tiny spiders that come out of cobwebs. Cosy Critters & Creepy Crawlies on Modrinth. Checked 9 October 2026: a Fabric build for 26.2 and 26.3. Practical note: its page says it is a client mod and does not need to be installed on the server, so it works on a server that otherwise stays vanilla. Each effect can be switched off in its settings.
Wandering Wildlife
A small mod that adds one new animal at a time rather than hundreds: the Red Panda, which lives in bamboo jungles, can be bred, and has trust mechanics. Wandering Wildlife on Modrinth. Checked 9 October 2026: Fabric, with its newest build tagged 26.1 to 26.1.2 (April 2026), so it is the least current mod on this list. Practical note: it suits small modpacks. Check the page for a build for your exact version before you add it.
Famous animal mods that don't fit current Minecraft
If you came here from an older list, these are the names you will have seen, and where each one stands today:
| Animania | Forge for 1.10 to 1.12.2, last file February 2021 (CurseForge) |
| Mo' Creatures | The original ends at 1.12.2 (October 2018, CurseForge). A separate revival, Mo' Creatures: Nostalgia Edition, is Forge for 1.20.1 (Modrinth) |
| Zoo and Wild Animals (Rebuilt) | Forge for 1.12.2, June 2020 (CurseForge). Its successor, ZAWA: Evolved, lists up to 1.20.1 (Modrinth) |
| Better Animals Plus | Forge, Fabric and Quilt up to 1.19.2, January 2023 (CurseForge) |
| Mowzie's Mobs | Forge for 1.20.1 and NeoForge for 1.21.1; no 26.x release (Modrinth, CurseForge) |
| Alex's Mobs (original) | Forge for 1.20.1; the Continued fork above covers 26.x |

They are still good mods for the old versions they support, which matters if your group plays a modpack on 1.20.1 or 1.12.2. They just won't load on Minecraft 26.x.
How to put these mods on a GTX server
- Pick one loader (Fabric, NeoForge or Forge) and one Minecraft version, and make sure every mod you want has a build for that pair. Mods are built for one loader and one version.
- In the GTX game panel, open Versions and install the launcher and version. Take a backup first if the server already has a world (how to back up your server).
- Stop the server, upload the mod's .jar file into the
modsfolder with the panel's Files page or SFTP (connect with SFTP), and start the server again. - Give your players the same loader, version and mod files. The simplest way is a modpack that everyone installs from the CurseForge, Modrinth or Prism launcher. You can also install one straight from the panel's Modpacks page (installing a modpack on your Minecraft Java server).
If the server won't start, check the Java version first: Minecraft 26.x needs Java 25 (how to set the Java version). More about server types, mods and backups is in our Minecraft server guide, and our Minecraft server hosting lets you pick Vanilla, Paper, Fabric, NeoForge and more from the panel.
What about Realms and Bedrock?
Java mods never work on a Realm: Mojang's Realms run the unmodded game, so everyone can join without installing anything. We explain what a Realm does allow, and how to move your Realm world to a modded server, in Minecraft Realms mods: can you mod a Realm?. Bedrock Edition has add-ons instead of mods, and none of the mods above work there. If your group is on Bedrock, see our Bedrock server hosting.
Animal mods FAQ
Do animal mods work on Bedrock Edition?
No. Fabric, NeoForge and Forge mods are for Java Edition only. Bedrock has add-ons and Marketplace content instead.
Do all players need the mod?
For mods that add mobs, yes: the server and every player need the same mod in the same version. The exception on this list is Cosy Critters & Creepy Crawlies, which is client-side only.
Which mod is the best place to start?
For animals that blend in with vanilla, start with Naturalist. For a big collection of creatures with their own models and behaviours, try Alex's Mobs Continued. Add one mod at a time, so if something breaks you know which one did it.
Can I add these mods to an existing world?
Yes, but new mobs and biome changes only appear in chunks that haven't been generated yet. Take a backup first, and don't remove a mod from a world afterwards without checking: removing mobs and blocks can leave errors behind.
