On players: RocketWerkz sets the limit for an Icarus dedicated server at 8 players, so 8 slots is a full server. On memory, RocketWerkz does not publish a memory figure for the dedicated server. Our own demo server used under 1GB while waiting in the server lobby, before a prospect was loaded; a running prospect uses more, and an Open World with big bases and many tames uses more again. Watch live memory use in the control panel and add memory from 8GB to 32GB at any time from your client area.

Thank you Mr. Gibbs

Absolutely loved the friendliness and the quick response time. Even though I felt a little dumb for not realizing the problem myself, it felt twice as good to know that the fix was simple and clear.

FAQ

Icarus Server Hosting FAQ

Getting Started

How fast is Icarus server setup?

+
Instantly. Your Icarus server is activated as soon as payment completes, and your control panel login and connection details arrive within seconds. Set a join password and an admin password in ServerSettings.ini, join from the game, and start your first prospect from the server lobby.

What is Icarus server hosting?

+
Icarus server hosting is a rented, always-online dedicated server for Icarus, the PvE survival game from RocketWerkz. GTX Gaming runs the official Icarus dedicated server in a datacenter 24 hours a day with DDoS protection, backups and a control panel, so your crew of up to 8 players can drop into the same Open World, mission or outpost whenever they like, without anyone having to host it from their own game.

How do I join my Icarus server?

+
Start Icarus on Steam, pick your character and choose Join Session in the HAB menu. Use the toggle in the top right of the session browser to switch to dedicated servers, then find your server by its name and join it. If you set a join password, players enter it when they join. Your server's IP address and ports are shown in your control panel.

How do I start a prospect on my Icarus server?

+
When no prospect is running, players who join land in the server lobby. From there you create a new prospect, load a saved one or resume the last one, for Open World, a mission or an outpost. By default anyone can start a prospect from the lobby; set AllowNonAdminsToLaunchProspects to false in ServerSettings.ini if only admins should. The server resumes the last prospect by itself after a restart.

Can I play Open World on my Icarus server?

+
Yes. Open World is the persistent Icarus mode with no mission timer, where you build, tame and play the story as Operations, and RocketWerkz recommends dedicated servers for it. Your GTX server keeps the world saved between sessions, with daily automatic backups, so your crew can carry on from wherever you stopped.

Can I move my existing Icarus prospect to my server?

+
Yes. Prospects you played on your own PC are saved as a .json file in your Icarus save folder. Upload that file to the server's Prospects folder with the File Manager or SFTP, then load it from the server lobby. Keep a copy first and never rename or edit the file, as RocketWerkz warns that this can corrupt the save. Our 24/7 support team can do the move for you.
Server & Sizing

How many players can join my Icarus server?

+
Up to 8. RocketWerkz sets the limit for an Icarus dedicated server at 8 players, the same as the game's co-op limit. Pick 4 slots for a solo player, a duo or a small crew, or 8 slots for a full squad, and change it at any time from your client area.

How much RAM does an Icarus server need?

+
Every server includes up to 5GB of RAM. RocketWerkz does not publish a memory figure for the dedicated server, and our own demo server used under 1GB while waiting in the server lobby, before a prospect was loaded. A running prospect uses more, and an Open World with big bases and many tames uses more again. The control panel shows live memory use, and you can add memory from 8GB to 32GB at any time from your client area.

Can I upgrade my Icarus server later?

+
Yes. You can change your player slots, RAM allocation, disk space, CPU priority and clock boost at any time from your client area, and upgrades are applied without losing your prospects. If you downgrade, you receive account credit for the difference. Moving to a different location is handled by our support team on request.

Which locations can I host an Icarus server in?

+
19 locations worldwide: New York, Ashburn, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Los Angeles and Portland in the USA; Quebec in Canada; London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Madrid in Europe; Sydney, Tokyo, Singapore and Mumbai in Asia-Pacific; plus Moscow. Some locations carry a surcharge, shown at checkout. Run the ping test on this page to find your lowest-latency location, then pick it during checkout.

Do players need the Icarus expansions to play on my server?

+
For the expansion maps, yes. The base game's maps are open to everyone with Icarus, while expansion maps such as Prometheus from New Frontiers and Elysium from Dangerous Horizons need that expansion owned on Steam to play there. Check that your whole crew owns an expansion before you start a prospect on its map.

Can PlayStation or Xbox players join my Icarus server?

+
No. This is a server for the PC version of Icarus on Steam, and players join it with the Steam version of the game. ICARUS: Console Edition for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S has its own co-op for up to four players on console, and crossplay between PC and console has not been announced.
Pricing & Billing

Should I host an Icarus server on my own PC?

+
You can, since RocketWerkz makes the dedicated server free to download, but you have to open its ports on your router, and the server is only online while that PC is running. A rented Icarus server runs 24 hours a day on datacenter hardware with DDoS protection and daily backups, so your crew can drop in whenever it suits them, even when you are offline.

How much does Icarus server hosting cost in the USA?

+
GTX Gaming Icarus server hosting starts at $10.90/mo for a 4 slot server, with up to 5GB of RAM and up to 100GB of NVMe storage included. A full 8 slot server is $11.66/mo. There are no setup fees and no contracts, so you can upgrade, downgrade or cancel at any time.

What is your refund policy?

+
We offer a 24-hour money-back guarantee on Icarus server hosting. If your server isn't right for you within the first 24 hours of order, contact us for a full refund, no questions asked.

Do you offer monthly Icarus server hosting with no contract?

+
Yes. Every GTX Gaming Icarus server can be billed monthly with no minimum contract and no setup fee, and you can add or remove upgrades or cancel at any time from your client area. Three-month, six-month and yearly billing cycles are also available with discounts of 5%, 10% and 15%.
The Complete Guide

The Complete Guide to Icarus Server Hosting in the USA & Worldwide

Everything you need to know before you rent an Icarus server in the USA or any of GTX Gaming's worldwide datacenters, from joining and the server lobby to Open World, Missions and Outposts, moving your prospect, server settings, admin commands, expansions, slots, pricing and locations.

What Is Icarus Server Hosting?

Icarus server hosting is a managed service that runs the official Icarus dedicated server on professional hardware in a datacenter, around the clock, so your crew can drop onto the planet whether or not you are at your PC. Every GTX Gaming Icarus server includes up to 5GB of RAM, up to 100GB of NVMe storage, daily automatic backups, enterprise DDoS protection and a web control panel, so jobs like setting a password, uploading a prospect or restoring a backup take a few clicks.

People look for it as an Icarus dedicated server, an Icarus game server or simply an Icarus server to rent, and they all mean the same thing: a private, always-on home for your own Icarus server, with your prospects, your bases and your rules.

What Is Icarus?

Icarus is a PvE survival game from RocketWerkz, the studio in Auckland, New Zealand led by DayZ creator Dean Hall. It was released on Steam in December 2021 and has had free weekly updates ever since. Icarus was meant to be a second Earth, until terraforming failed and its air turned toxic; now prospectors drop from an orbital station to harvest exotic matter and survive whatever the planet throws at them.

  • Three game modes: a persistent Open World, timed Missions and creative Outposts, for up to eight co-op players.
  • Brutal PvE: toxic air, apex predators, storms and forest fires, with oxygen, food and water to manage.
  • Three tech trees: four tiers of planetary tech, more than 100 player talents and the orbital workshop, where exotics buy gear for your next drop.
  • Taming and farming: tame mounts and companions, breed animals and run farms to keep your base supplied.
  • Expansions: New Frontiers adds the Prometheus map and Dangerous Horizons adds Elysium, alongside outpost packs.

Why Rent an Icarus Server?

RocketWerkz makes the Icarus dedicated server free to download, so you could run it on a spare machine at home. Most crews rent an Icarus server instead, for reasons that show up within the first week:

  • Always online: the server runs 24 hours a day, so anyone in your crew can drop in and keep building without waiting for the host.
  • Made for Open World: RocketWerkz recommends dedicated servers for Open World sessions, and a persistent world is exactly what a rented server keeps safe.
  • Nothing to run at home: no ports to open on your router and no PC left running, and your own PC stays free for playing.
  • Proper hardware: high-frequency CPUs and NVMe storage in a datacenter, with DDoS protection at the network edge.
  • Backups and support: daily automatic backups and a 24/7 support team mean a broken save is an inconvenience, not the end of your base.

Getting Started & Joining Your Icarus Server

Your server is set up the moment you order. From there, getting your crew onto the planet typically looks like this:

  • Order: choose 4 or 8 slots and your location, and your server is set up instantly.
  • Name and secure it: set the server name in Start.bat and the join and admin passwords in ServerSettings.ini through Configuration Files, then restart.
  • Join: in Icarus, pick your character, choose Join Session in the HAB menu, switch the session browser to dedicated servers with the toggle in the top right, and join your server.
  • Start a prospect: in the server lobby, create an Open World, a mission or an outpost, or load one you uploaded.

The server's IP address and ports are shown in your control panel, and the Web Console shows the server's own output, so you can see straight away what it is doing.

The Server Lobby: Prospects, Missions & Outposts

An Icarus dedicated server runs one prospect at a time. When no prospect is loaded, players who join arrive in the server lobby, where they can run the server's commands and pick what to play:

  • Create a prospect: start a new Open World, mission or outpost and choose its difficulty, from easy to extreme, and whether it is hardcore with no respawns.
  • Load a prospect: pick any prospect saved on the server, including ones you uploaded from your own PC.
  • Resume: the server resumes the last prospect by itself when it starts, so a restart puts your crew straight back into your world.
  • Who decides: by default anyone in the lobby can start or load a prospect, while deleting one needs an admin. Change either rule in ServerSettings.ini.

Open World is the mode most crews keep running on a server: no timer, story Operations included, and a base that is still there next week. Missions suit groups that want a timed challenge, and Outposts suit builders.

Moving Your Prospect from Your PC or Another Host

Already playing Icarus with friends? You do not have to start again. RocketWerkz documents how to move a prospect to a dedicated server, and on your GTX server it takes a few minutes:

  • Back it up: make a copy of your prospect file first. RocketWerkz warns that renaming the file or editing its contents can corrupt the save beyond repair.
  • Find it: on your PC, prospects are saved as a .json file in your Icarus save folder, under PlayerData, your Steam ID and Prospects.
  • Upload it: copy the file into the server's Prospects folder with the File Manager, or with SFTP if you prefer a desktop client.
  • Load it: join the server, open the server lobby and load your prospect by name.

Moving from another host works the same way, and our 24/7 support team can handle the whole move for you.

Server Settings, Passwords & Admin Commands

Your server's rules live in ServerSettings.ini, which you edit through Configuration Files in the control panel. The settings that matter most:

  • JoinPassword: the password players need to join. Leave it empty for a public server.
  • AdminPassword: the password for admin commands. Set one: with no admin password, anyone can log in as admin.
  • MaxPlayers: how many players can be on at once, up to 8.
  • ShutdownIfEmptyFor and ShutdownIfNotJoinedFor: how long the server waits, paused, before it returns to the lobby when nobody is playing. Raise them, or set a negative value, to keep a prospect running.
  • AllowNonAdminsToLaunchProspects and AllowNonAdminsToDeleteProspects: whether ordinary players may start or delete prospects from the lobby.

Admin commands are typed in the game chat with a slash, starting with /AdminLogin and your admin password. In the lobby the same commands create, load and resume prospects.

Expansions, Maps & Outposts on Your Server

Icarus has grown a lot since launch, and your server runs the current version of the official dedicated server, updated from the panel with Steam Update. The base game's maps are open to everyone who owns Icarus. Expansion maps such as Prometheus from New Frontiers and Elysium from Dangerous Horizons need that expansion owned on Steam to play there, and outpost packs add their own outpost maps. Before you start a prospect on an expansion map, check that your whole crew owns the expansion, or start it on a base game map instead.

RocketWerkz releases updates most weeks. When the game updates, update your server from the panel so your crew's game and the server stay on the same version.

How Much Does Icarus Server Hosting Cost in the USA?

Pricing is simple: you pay for the number of slots, with up to 5GB of RAM and up to 100GB of NVMe storage included on every server:

  • 4 slots: from $10.90/mo. Solo players, duos and small crews.
  • 8 slots: from $11.66/mo. The full 8 players an Icarus server allows.

All plans include instant setup, DDoS protection, daily automatic backups and 24/7 support, with no setup fee and no contract. Billing is monthly by default, with three-month, six-month and yearly cycles available at a discount, and you can change plan or cancel at any time.

How Many Slots and How Much RAM Does an Icarus Server Need?

Choose a slot for every player who will be on the server at the same time. RocketWerkz sets the limit for an Icarus dedicated server at 8 players, so 4 slots suits a solo player, a duo or a small crew, and 8 slots is a full squad. On memory, RocketWerkz does not publish a memory figure for the dedicated server. Our own demo server used under 1GB while waiting in the server lobby, before a prospect was loaded; a running prospect uses more, and an Open World with big bases and many tames uses more again. The up to 5GB included with every server is the place to start, the control panel shows live memory use, and you can add memory from 8GB to 32GB at any time.

Locations for Icarus Server Hosting

Survival is hard enough without lag, so host close to your crew. GTX Gaming runs Icarus server hosting from seven US locations, with New York preselected on this page and Ashburn, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Los Angeles and Portland covering the rest of the country, plus 12 more locations worldwide: Quebec in Canada; London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Madrid in Europe; Sydney, Tokyo, Singapore and Mumbai in Asia-Pacific; plus Moscow. Some locations carry a surcharge, shown at checkout. Use the live ping test above to find the lowest-latency location for your crew, pick it at checkout, and if you need to move later our support team can migrate your server.
