Choosing a Project Zomboid server hosting provider is a long-term decision. Server tick rate, DDoS resilience, B41 / B42 branch flexibility, Steam Workshop mod support, backup discipline and support response time can make or break a survival community. Here's what to look for, and how GTX Gaming delivers on every criterion:

What to Look For Why It Matters for Project Zomboid GTX Gaming
High-frequency CPU The Project Zomboid server runs heavy single-thread work for AI, pathfinding and zombie hordes. Anything below 4GHz stutters once a community gathers 50+ zeds in one cell. Intel Core i9-13900K (5.7GHz) and AMD Ryzen 9 7950X / 7950X3D / 9950X / 9950X3D
DDR5 ECC RAM Modded Project Zomboid worlds with 30+ Workshop mods and 16+ player slots regularly use 6-10GB of RAM. ECC prevents silent corruption on long-running roleplay communities. DDR5-5600 ECC on every Project Zomboid server
NVMe Gen5 storage Project Zomboid streams cell data and player inventories from disk constantly. Slow storage causes rubber-banding around large bases and 30-second loot lag. NVMe Gen5 SSDs in RAID across all locations
Enterprise DDoS protection Public Project Zomboid servers attract trolls and DDoS attempts, especially after major patches. Residential-grade filtering fails instantly. Multi-Tbps edge mitigation, included free
B42 Stable & B41 Legacy support Communities are split across the new B42 Stable build and the legacy B41 branch. You shouldn't be forced into one or charged extra for the other. Both branches first-class, one-click switch in the control panel
1-click Steam Workshop mods Manually editing server.ini WorkshopItems and Mods entries every time you add a Workshop pack eats hours and breaks on typos. Paste a Workshop ID or collection URL and the panel installs and wires it up
Free world migration If your existing Saves/Multiplayer folder lives on a friend's PC or another host, you should never have to start over. Drag your save folder into the File Manager, plus a free admin migration if you get stuck
Scheduled offsite backups One corrupted save can lose a community's entire base build and character progression. Most hosts only keep a single overnight backup. Auto-clone to offsite storage on every restart, plus on-demand backups
UK + global locations Latency under 80ms matters for melee combat timing and avoiding desync deaths against fast-shamblers. London + 13 global datacentres, with the live ping test above
Real Project Zomboid admins on support Generic L1 support doesn't know what server.ini, sandbox vars or a Workshop conflict is. You'll wait hours for a fix. 24/7 Project Zomboid-trained UK support, 1-15 min ticket response
Money-back guarantee You shouldn't need a long-term contract to test if a host can keep a 24-player B42 community stable. 24-hour full refund, no setup fees, no contracts
Long-term reputation New hosts disappear. The hosts that survive a decade have the engineering, the network and the cashflow to stay. Hosting game servers since 2014, 4.7 / 5 from 1,400+ Trustpilot reviews

I have used GTX for a number of years…

I have used GTX for a number of years for various gaming servers and have always found them to be prompt and very helpful. The servers themselves are very reliable and easy to use. Uploading files is very simple. If you're unsure, give them a go. You won't regret it.

Project Zomboid Server Hosting FAQ

Yes, but switching branches regenerates the server, so your existing world data will not carry over. Before switching, use the Backup Manager in your control panel to download a full backup of your current save if you want to keep it. Once you have your backup, you can change branches in a single click without raising a ticket. For a full walkthrough, see our guide: How to switch your game server to a different game →

Yes. The Indie Stone has confirmed Build 42 (version 42.20) moves to the Stable branch on 29 July 2026 as the default build on Steam, and every GTX Gaming Project Zomboid server supports it from day one. New orders can deploy B42 Stable instantly, and existing B41 Legacy servers can switch to B42 in one click from the control panel. Note that saves from the old 42.19 Unstable build are not compatible with 42.20, so download a backup before updating if you want to keep an older world.

Instantly. Your Project Zomboid server is activated the moment your order completes. You'll receive your control panel login, server IP and admin password within seconds and can be in-game looting Knox County in under 2 minutes on either the B41 or B42 branch.

Yes. The GTX control panel includes a one-click Steam Workshop mod installer for Project Zomboid. Paste the Workshop ID or full collection URL and the server will download the mod, write the WorkshopItems and Mods entries into your server.ini, and reload on the next restart. Both B41 and B42 Workshop mods are fully supported.

Both the B41 and B42 plans start at 10 player slots from £9.50/mo and can be raised to 20, 30, 40 or higher from the control panel at checkout or on an active server. Project Zomboid is RAM-sensitive once you load 20+ Workshop mods, so for communities running large modpacks we recommend bumping RAM at the same time as slots.

For Build 42, plan on 6-8GB of RAM for a small vanilla group (2-4 players), 8-12GB for a 5-10 player community with light mods, and 12-16GB or more for 10+ players running 30+ Workshop mods. Build 41 Legacy servers typically need around 2GB less at each tier. Every GTX Gaming Project Zomboid server can have its RAM upgraded at any time from your client area, so start small and scale as your world and modlist grow.

Project Zomboid server hosting starts at £9.50/mo for both the B42 Stable and the B41 Legacy branch. Quarterly, semi-annual and annual billing cycles are available with optional discounts (5% / 10% / 15%) if you prefer to pay less frequently. There are no setup fees, no minimum contract and a 24-hour money-back guarantee.

Yes. Whether your Project Zomboid world is currently hosted locally on your PC or with another provider, the Saves/Multiplayer/<servername>/ folder and the matching server.ini, sandbox vars and spawn files can be uploaded directly via our SFTP or File Manager. If you'd like us to handle the migration, open a support ticket and our team will move the world for you, free of charge.

We offer a 24-hour money-back guarantee on Project Zomboid server hosting. If your server isn't right for you within the first 24 hours of order, contact us for a full refund, no questions asked.

Yes, every Project Zomboid server includes enterprise-grade DDoS protection at no extra cost. Our datacentres mitigate multi-Tbps attacks at the edge so malicious traffic never reaches your server. Public Project Zomboid communities attract trolls and DDoS attempts; with GTX you stay online.

You can technically host a Project Zomboid server on your own PC, but it has serious downsides: your server only stays online while your PC is on (so friends in different time zones lose access); you'll need port forwarding (a security risk); residential broadband has zero DDoS protection; and your in-game frame rate suffers because the Project Zomboid client and the dedicated server compete for the same CPU cores. Renting a dedicated Project Zomboid server from GTX gives you 24/7 uptime, enterprise DDoS protection, dedicated 5.7GHz CPU cores, one-click Workshop mods and scheduled offsite backups, for less than a coffee per week.

GTX Gaming has been hosting Project Zomboid servers since the early-access multiplayer era and is rated 4.7 / 5 from 1,400+ verified Trustpilot reviews. Our UK Project Zomboid server hosting runs on Intel Core i9-13900K (5.7GHz) and AMD Ryzen 9 7950X / 7950X3D / 9950X / 9950X3D CPUs, DDR5-5600 ECC RAM and NVMe Gen5 SSDs in our London datacentre, with one-click Steam Workshop installs, B42 Stable and B41 Legacy branch support, scheduled offsite backups, world upload and migration, enterprise DDoS protection and 24/7 support. Plans start at £9.50/mo.

GTX Gaming's UK Project Zomboid servers are hosted in our London datacentre, which delivers a ping of under 20ms for most players across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland on BT, Virgin Media, Sky and EE connections, and low latency for Irish and Western European players too. If your group is spread further afield, the same plans deploy to any of our 13 other worldwide locations, including New York, Frankfurt, Singapore and Sydney. Run the live ping test on this page to check your latency before you order.

GTX Gaming is not the cheapest Project Zomboid server hosting on the market, but it is one of the best value premium hosts. Plans start at £9.50/mo. Cheaper Project Zomboid hosts (£3-6/mo) typically use shared CPU cores, oversubscribed RAM and have no DDoS protection, which leads to server stutter around large bases and outages on patch day. GTX uses dedicated 5.7GHz CPU cores, DDR5 ECC RAM, NVMe Gen5 storage and edge DDoS protection on every Project Zomboid server, with no setup fees, no contracts and a 24-hour money-back guarantee.

Free Project Zomboid server hosting does not exist as a sustainable product. Running a Project Zomboid server requires dedicated CPU cores, real RAM, NVMe storage and DDoS-protected bandwidth, all of which cost real money. Anyone offering free Project Zomboid hosting is either limiting it to a tiny number of slots, displaying ads, harvesting data, or shutting down within weeks. The closest legitimate option is GTX Gaming's 24-hour money-back guarantee, which lets you try our paid Project Zomboid server hosting risk-free, or the standard plan from £9.50/mo.

Project Zomboid server hosting is a managed service: GTX installs the Project Zomboid dedicated server software for either B41 or B42, gives you a one-click control panel for Steam Workshop mods, server.ini editing, world uploads, scheduled backups and broadcast tasks, and takes care of operating system updates, security patches and DDoS mitigation. A Project Zomboid VPS gives you a bare Linux or Windows machine with no Project Zomboid software installed, no control panel and no support; you install SteamCMD, deploy the dedicated server, edit server.ini by hand, set up scheduled backups via cron, and patch the OS yourself. Most communities want managed Project Zomboid server hosting because it is dramatically faster to set up, easier to maintain and includes proper DDoS protection out of the box.

Yes, every GTX Gaming Project Zomboid server hosting plan is billed monthly with no minimum contract and no setup fees. You can upgrade, downgrade or cancel at any time directly from your client area. Quarterly, semi-annual and annual billing cycles are also available with optional discounts if you prefer to pay less frequently.

The Complete Guide to Project Zomboid Server Hosting in the UK & Worldwide

Everything you need to know before you rent a Project Zomboid server in the UK or any of GTX Gaming's worldwide datacentres, from picking between the B42 Stable and B41 Legacy branches to installing Steam Workshop mods, migrating your existing save, and comparing self-hosting vs professional hosting.

What Is Project Zomboid Server Hosting?

Project Zomboid server hosting is a managed online service that runs the official Indie Stone Project Zomboid dedicated server software on professional hardware in a datacentre, around the clock, so that your community can connect to a single persistent Knox County save from anywhere on PC without anyone needing to leave their machine switched on. When you host your Project Zomboid server with a professional provider like GTX Gaming, your world stays online whether your PC is on or off, you get enterprise DDoS protection, dedicated CPU and RAM, automatic offsite backups of your Saves/Multiplayer folder, and a web control panel that turns admin tasks (switching between the B41 and B42 branches, installing Steam Workshop mods, uploading a save from your PC, editing server.ini, restoring a backup, raising the player cap) into one-click operations.

Unlike running the server from your own PC, a Project Zomboid dedicated server hosted by GTX uses high-frequency 5.7GHz CPUs, DDR5-5600 ECC RAM, and NVMe Gen5 SSDs tuned specifically for the load patterns of a Java-based survival server: cell streaming, zombie AI, pathfinding, inventory persistence, player base saving and Workshop mod loading. The result is smoother performance around large bases, lower latency in heated zombie hordes, and a stable experience for every survivor in the group.

B42 Stable vs B41 Legacy: Which Should You Host?

The Indie Stone promoted Build 42 to the Stable branch on 29 July 2026 (version 42.20), making it the default build on Steam. B42 brings a rewritten multiplayer engine, expanded crafting, animal husbandry, new professions and improved scalability, and is the right choice for most new communities. B41 remains available as the legacy branch, with years of battle-tested netcode and the largest back-catalogue of Workshop mods, many of which are still B41-only. GTX Gaming hosts both as first-class branches; pick the one that fits your community and switch any time from the control panel.

Steam Workshop Mods on Project Zomboid Servers

Project Zomboid's modding ecosystem is built almost entirely on the Steam Workshop. The GTX control panel includes a one-click Workshop installer that hides the manual server.ini editing most hosts force you to do:

  • Workshop IDs & collection URLs: paste either the numeric Workshop ID or the full collection URL into the panel; the server downloads the mod, writes the WorkshopItems and Mods entries into your server.ini, and reloads on the next restart.
  • Both B41 and B42 supported: the installer detects which branch you're on and pulls the matching Workshop revision. Switching branches re-resolves your modpack automatically.
  • Mod ordering: the panel preserves load order across restarts so Workshop packs with strict dependency chains (Common Sense, ModOptions, Britas, Authentic Z, Brita's Weapon Pack) keep working.
  • Scheduled Steam updates: set a daily Scheduled Task to run a Steam Workshop refresh so all mods stay current with the game version. Critical the day The Indie Stone ships a hotfix.

Heavy modpacks (40+ Workshop entries) push memory use above 8GB, so if you're running large community collections we recommend bumping RAM at the same time as raising slots. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see our guide: How to install Steam Workshop mods & maps on your Project Zomboid server →

Why Rent a Project Zomboid Server Instead of Self-Hosting?

It's tempting to rent a Project Zomboid server by simply running the official Indie Stone dedicated server tool on your home PC. In practice, self-hosting Project Zomboid has four big problems:

  • 24/7 uptime: Project Zomboid worlds are most valuable when the whole group can hop in at different hours. Every hour your server is offline, friends in different time zones lose access. A home PC can't reliably stay on for months at a time.
  • DDoS attacks: public Project Zomboid servers attract trolls, especially around major patches. Residential broadband has zero protection.
  • Performance: the Project Zomboid server does heavy single-thread work for zombie AI, pathfinding and cell saves. If your client is competing for cores you'll see frame-time spikes around big bases and during horde events. A dedicated server frees both.
  • Offsite backups: one corrupted save can lose months of base progress. GTX clones every world to offsite storage on each restart.

Renting a dedicated Project Zomboid game server from GTX Gaming solves every one of these problems. Plans start from £9.50/mo on either the B42 Stable or B41 Legacy branch, with 10+ slots, scheduled offsite backups, one-click Workshop mods, web RCON, enterprise DDoS protection and 24/7 support.

What Hardware Does Project Zomboid Server Hosting Need?

Project Zomboid is heavily CPU-bound on the main Java thread that handles zombie AI, pathfinding and cell streaming. Cheap hosts often use older Xeons running at 2 to 3GHz; large bases, big hordes and modded servers stutter on those boxes. GTX Gaming Project Zomboid servers run on:

  • Intel Core i9-13900K (5.7GHz boost): for maximum single-thread performance, ideal for 16+ player worlds with Workshop mods
  • AMD Ryzen 9 7950X / 9950X / 7950X3D / 9950X3D: available in our extreme-performance locations, the best Project Zomboid hosting CPUs available
  • DDR5-5600 ECC memory: fastest available, error-corrected for stability across months of base progression
  • NVMe Gen5 SSDs in RAID configuration, so cell data and inventories stream cleanly without 30-second loot lag around large bases
  • 10Gbps uplinks with enterprise edge DDoS protection, capable of mitigating multi-Tbps attacks before they ever reach your server

This is the same hardware tier the largest community Project Zomboid networks rely on, and it's what makes the difference between a smooth roleplay night and a stuttering, desynced one.

How Much RAM Does a Project Zomboid Server Need?

RAM is the single biggest sizing decision in Project Zomboid server hosting, and Build 42 raised the bar: the new crafting system, animal AI and expanded world simulation load far more data into memory than Build 41, so a world that ran happily on 4GB under B41 wants 6-8GB under B42 just to run comfortably. Use these working numbers for a B42 server:

Players Vanilla Light mods (under 10) Heavy mods (30+)
2-4 6-8GB 8-10GB 10-12GB
5-10 8-10GB 10-12GB 12-16GB
10-20 10-12GB 12-16GB 16GB+

Build 41 Legacy servers typically need around 2GB less at each tier. If you're unsure, start at 8GB for a small group: you can upgrade or downgrade your server's RAM package at any time from your client area without losing your world, and our support team will happily recommend a size for your exact modlist and player count.

How Much Does Project Zomboid Server Hosting Cost in the UK?

The price of a Project Zomboid game server in the UK varies by RAM, hardware tier and provider. Budget hosts (£3 to £6/mo) typically use shared RAM and oversubscribed CPUs, leading to stutter around big bases and outages on patch day. Premium hosts (£9/mo and up) like GTX Gaming use dedicated UK-region resources, enterprise hardware and proper DDoS protection.

GTX Gaming Project Zomboid pricing (UK, GBP, monthly):

  • From £9.50/mo (B42 Stable): the new default Steam branch with the rewritten multiplayer engine, expanded crafting and improved scalability
  • From £9.50/mo (B41 Legacy): the long-running legacy branch with the largest back-catalogue of Workshop mods
  • Switch branches anytime: change between B42 and B41 in a single click from the control panel without paying extra

Every order includes offsite backups, instant setup, DDoS protection, B42 + B41 branch support, one-click Steam Workshop mods, world upload and migration, free subdomain and 24/7 support. There are no setup fees or contracts. Billing is monthly and you can upgrade, downgrade or cancel any time. Quarterly, semi-annual and annual cycles offer 5%, 10% and 15% discounts if you prefer to pay less frequently.

Locations for Project Zomboid Server Hosting in the UK

Latency matters more for Project Zomboid than people expect. Even 100ms of ping makes melee timing feel sluggish and turns close-quarters zombie encounters into desync deaths. To minimise it, GTX Gaming runs Project Zomboid server hosting from our United Kingdom datacentre in London (typically <20ms ping for British, Irish and Western European players), plus 13 additional global locations including the USA (New York, Dallas, Charlotte, Oregon, Washington, Los Angeles), Canada (Quebec), Germany (Frankfurt), France (Paris), Poland, Singapore, India and Australia (Sydney). Use the live ping test above to find the lowest-latency location for your group, then deploy there with one click.

Project Zomboid Server Hosting Glossary

Quick definitions of the terms you'll see across Project Zomboid server hosting control panels, mod docs and our knowledge base:

Build 41 (B41)
The legacy branch of Project Zomboid and the default build for many years. It still has the deepest back-catalogue of Steam Workshop mods and remains popular with established roleplay communities.
Build 42 (B42)
The stable branch of Project Zomboid since 29 July 2026 (version 42.20), when it replaced B41 as the default Steam build. It brings a rewritten multiplayer engine, expanded crafting, animal husbandry and new professions.
The Indie Stone
The UK developer behind Project Zomboid. Both the publisher and the developer of the game.
Steam Workshop
The mod catalogue Project Zomboid uses. Players subscribe to Workshop items in their Steam client; servers reference the same Workshop IDs in server.ini to load matching mods.
Workshop ID
The numeric ID assigned to a Steam Workshop submission (e.g. 2392709985). Paste it into the GTX panel and the installer handles the rest.
Mod ID
The internal mod identifier declared by the mod author (e.g. BritasArmorPack). Listed in the Mods= line of server.ini; not the same as the Workshop ID.
server.ini
The main Project Zomboid server config file. Sets server name, password, player slots, public flag, Mods/WorkshopItems and dozens of game-rule toggles. Editable from the GTX configurator.
Sandbox Vars
The companion config file (<servername>_SandboxVars.lua) that controls zombie population, loot rarity, weather, vehicle spawns and other gameplay variables. Editable from the GTX configurator.
Spawn Regions
The third companion file (<servername>_spawnregions.lua) that defines which map cells players can spawn into. Edited automatically when you add a map mod such as Bedford Falls or Eerie County.
SteamCMD
The command-line Steam client used to install and update the Project Zomboid dedicated server. The GTX control panel runs SteamCMD on your behalf so you never touch the command line.
RCON
Remote Console. The protocol used to send admin commands to a Project Zomboid server from outside the game. GTX includes a built-in web RCON button in the control panel.
Knox County
The fictional Kentucky county Project Zomboid is set in, covering Muldraugh, West Point, Riverside, Rosewood, March Ridge and Louisville on the official map.
Saves/Multiplayer
The folder Project Zomboid stores multiplayer worlds in. Each save lives under Saves/Multiplayer/<servername>/ and is what you upload to migrate a world to GTX.
Dedicated Server
A Project Zomboid server process running on its own machine rather than inside someone's game client. Required for 24/7 access without one player keeping their PC online.
SFTP
Secure File Transfer Protocol. The encrypted way to upload mods, save folders and config files to your Project Zomboid server. Supported by FileZilla, WinSCP, Cyberduck and the GTX File Manager.
DDoS Protection
Network-level defence against Distributed Denial of Service attacks. Important for public Project Zomboid servers and included free on every GTX plan.
