Quick answer
Most 7 Days to Die mods written for Alpha 21 or earlier will not load on V3 as they are, because V3.0 changed how the game's data, interface and server settings work. Before you install anything, check which game version the mod lists, then pick one that says V3 (or the exact version you run). If the mod you love hasn't been updated, you can pin an older game version instead. This guide covers what changed, how to choose, and how to install mods on a server.
On this pageWhy old "best mods" lists are out of date
Last updated 9 October 2026. Checked against 7 Days to Die V3.3.0 (released 5 October 2026).
Why old "best mods" lists are out of date
The previous version of this page was a top 10 built around Alpha 20 and Alpha 21 mods such as SMX, Darkness Falls, BDub's Vehicles and Firearms Expansion. A mod is written against one version of the game's files, and V3.0 "Dead Hot Summer" changed a lot of them. Lists like that go stale quickly, so we have replaced it with a guide that stays useful when the next update lands.
Setting up a modded server? Our 7 Days to Die server guide covers mods, game versions, crossplay and backups step by step.
The official V3.0 release notes point at the biggest changes for modders:
- The old server difficulty settings were replaced by a single
SandboxCodeproperty, so mods and server configs that set individual difficulty values need updating. - The WebDashboard code was folded into the game, and code mods now reference only
Assembly-CSharp.dllrather than a set of extra assemblies. - World generation and POIs changed (60+ new POIs and a reworked generator), so mods that add or edit world content need checking.
The community-run 7 Days to Die Modding Wiki (not the developers) lists more detail: UI files moved from Config/XUi to Config/XUi_InGame, Localization.txt became Localization.csv, and several specialised block classes were replaced. Files such as items.xml, recipes.xml and progression.xml need no structural changes, which is why simple recipe and item tweaks often survive a major update while UI and code mods do not.
Three kinds of 7 Days to Die mod
| Type | What it changes | Easy Anti-Cheat | V3 risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| XML modlet | Items, recipes, loot, progression, spawning values | Can stay on | Lowest, if it only touches the safe files above |
| UI or localisation mod | HUD, menus, text | Can stay on | High: the UI framework was reworked in V3.0 |
| Code mod or overhaul | New systems, zombies, items, quests (Darkness Falls, Undead Legacy and similar) | Off, on the server and for every player | Highest: needs a build made for your game version |
Mods that include code (DLL files) can't run with Easy Anti-Cheat on, so a server running one needs it off and so does every player who joins.
How to choose a mod that works on your version
- Check the version on the mod page. On Nexus Mods or the author's own page, look for the game version, not just "latest". If it says Alpha 21, A20 or 2.x, it was built for an older game.
- Check the date of the last update. A mod updated before the V3.0 release (June 2026) has not been tested on V3.
- Read the comments and bug reports. Other players will say if it loads on your version and whether it breaks saves.
- Add one mod at a time to a fresh test world, and watch the log for red errors on startup before you add the next.
- Keep a backup of your world before any change. Removing a mod that added blocks or items can break a save.
Overhaul mods: Darkness Falls and the big names
Overhaul mods such as Darkness Falls, Undead Legacy and Ravenhearst replace large parts of the game. They are updated by small teams, and a port to a new major version can take months. At the time of writing, the current Darkness Falls V6 build (6.0.0.20) was reported by community guides as built for the 1.x game, not V3, and its authors distribute it themselves. Check each overhaul's own page, Discord or forum thread for the version it supports before you plan a server around it. If a mod you want only supports an older version, you can pin that game version through Steam (right-click the game, open Properties, then Betas) and run the whole server on it. Everyone who joins must use the same version.
Our guide to 7 Days to Die overhaul mods goes into the large overhauls in more detail.
How to install mods on a 7 Days to Die server
- Stop the server and take a backup of your world.
- Download the mod and unzip it. Each mod is a folder with a
ModInfo.xmlfile inside, and the folder goes straight into theModsfolder of the server (Mods/ModName/ModInfo.xml). A mod placed one folder too deep is simply ignored. - If the mod includes code, turn Easy Anti-Cheat off in the server config.
- Start the server and read the log for errors. Fix or remove anything that reports a missing file or a red error.
- Tell your players what to install. Server-side XML changes need nothing on their PC, but mods that change the UI or add new models need the same mod installed on every player's PC. Players on console can't install mods, so keep the server to server-side modlets if consoles join.
On a GTX 7 Days to Die server you upload the mod folder to Mods with the panel's file manager or SFTP and restart. You also get full access to the server config, so changing the EAC setting or world type is a quick edit.
7 Days to Die mods FAQ
Do Alpha 21 mods work on V3.3?
Not reliably. Some simple XML modlets still load, but anything that touches the UI, localisation, blocks or code was built for a different game and often fails. Look for a build that says V3.
Can I use mods with Easy Anti-Cheat on?
Only XML-only mods. Mods with code need EAC off.
Can I play Darkness Falls on the newest version?
Not as of this update, according to the Darkness Falls V6 guides we found, which put it on an older game version. Check its official page for a V3 port, or pin the version it supports.
Where do I download 7 Days to Die mods?
The biggest library is Nexus Mods. Large overhauls are also released on their own sites, forums and Discord servers. Download from the author's own page whenever you can.
Will mods break my save?
Adding a modlet is usually safe, but removing one that added blocks or items can break a save. Test on a copy of your world and keep backups.
