Quick answer
Since Palworld 1.0 the Options-menu button that used to be called Respawn is called Emergency Escape, and it never drops your items, whatever your world settings are. It is there to get you out of trouble, not to replace dying. When you actually die, you respawn and can pick a fast travel point, not just your base or your starting spot. What you drop when you die is controlled by the DeathPenalty world setting.

Below: what changed in 1.0, the server settings for death and respawn (with the values the official docs list), the items that get you home or revive a Pal, and answers to the questions people search for.
Last updated 9 October 2026. Checked against Palworld 1.0.5 (15 September 2026): Pocketpair's patch notes, the official server docs (version 1.0.4) and the game's data files. The old advice here about farming bosses by respawning and reviving Pals in 10 minutes had no source and has been removed.
Palworld respawn in 1.0: what changed
All of these are from the official 1.0 patch notes:
- Respawn became Emergency Escape. The patch notes read "Changed 'Respawn' to 'Emergency Escape.' Regardless of world settings, items will no longer be dropped."
- You can choose where to come back. "Upon respawning, players can now select Fast Travel points other than their base or starting location."
- Normal difficulty no longer drops equipped items on death. This is in the updated default world settings, and it applies when you reset world settings or start a new game.
- Base fast travel is easier. Within base range you can fast travel straight from the map, between bases or to Great Eagle Statues, without using the Palbox.
Emergency Escape (the "emergency respawn" button)
Emergency Escape lives in the Options menu. It is the old Respawn button, and the patch notes I checked give one example of when to use it: if you keep a save from v0.7.3 or earlier, the playable area's outer edge moved in 1.0 and you may spawn outside the new boundary, in which case Pocketpair says to use Emergency Escape. Because it never drops items, it is safe to use when you are stuck. The patch notes do not say where it puts you, so treat it as a last resort rather than a travel shortcut.
It is not a way to revive a Pal: for that, see the Revival Potion below.
Death penalty and respawn settings for your server
If you host a world, these are the death and respawn settings in the official configuration docs. The docs describe them, but do not list default values on that page, so check your own settings file before changing anything.

The most common change is DeathPenalty: set it to None and nobody drops anything when they die, set it to Item to keep equipment but drop everything else. All adds your team of Pals to the drop, so think hard before using it. Where to edit these is in our guide to changing your Palworld server settings, and our best world settings for Palworld guide has setting ideas. If you do not have a server yet, our Palworld server guide walks through setting one up, or you can rent a Palworld server and change these from the panel.
Getting home fast after you respawn
- Great Eagle Statue: "a stone monument in the shape of a Chikipi" that allows fast travel to the place it is built. Build cost: 5 Paldium Fragment, 10 Stone. Put one near wherever you spend most of your time.
- Watchtowers: from the 1.0 notes, accessing one reveals the surrounding map and lets it serve as a fast travel point.
- Homeward Thundercloud: "transports you to the nearest base", and cannot be used in dungeons and similar locations. Its recipe unlocks at level 22.
Our Palworld fast travel guide covers the rest of the travel options.
Reviving Pals and yourself
- Revival Potion: "A potion that revives a Pal that has been injured and is unable to move." Its recipe unlocks at level 61.
- The Palbox: the building description says "Pals inside gradually recover Health". The data gives no time, so any "10 minutes" figure you have seen is not from the game files.
- Herbil: Herbil's Harness lets Herbil "revive the player when incapacitated" with its healing power,, and the patch notes mention players being revived by Herbil Pulse.
- Permanent loss: the server setting
bPalLostmakes Pals permanently lost on death.
Do resources respawn?
Yes. The server docs have CollectionObjectRespawnSpeedRate for "gatherable objects respawn interval", and a 1.0.4 fix mentions trees that respawned inside a base. The official sources give no fixed respawn times, so I will not quote one. On your own server you can change the rate with that setting.
Palworld Respawn FAQ
What happened to Respawn in the Options menu?
Pocketpair renamed it Emergency Escape in 1.0, and made it so items are never dropped when you use it, regardless of world settings.
Do I lose items when I die in Palworld?
It depends on the world's DeathPenalty setting: None drops nothing, Item drops everything except equipment, ItemAndEquipment drops all items, and All drops all items and your team's Pals. In the default settings for Normal difficulty, equipped items are no longer dropped on death (1.0 patch notes).
Can I choose where I respawn?
Yes. Since 1.0 you can select fast travel points when you respawn, not only your base or starting location.
How do I revive a fainted Pal?
Use a Revival Potion (unlocks at level 61), which revives a Pal that is injured and unable to move. Pals stored in a Palbox gradually recover Health.
How do I turn off death drops on my server?
Set DeathPenalty to None in your world settings. Our settings guide shows where the file is.
What is hardcore mode?
The bHardcore server setting. The docs say you will not be able to respawn on death, and bCharacterRecreateInHardcore controls whether you can recreate your character after dying.
