Quick answer
Palworld farming is two separate jobs. Plantations grow crops (berries, wheat, tomatoes and more) and need Pals with Planting and Watering to look after them. The Ranch makes items from Pals that have Ranching suitability, and it is also where Vaelet drops seeds. You can build a Berry Plantation or the Ranch at level 5, a Wheat Plantation at level 15, and the other crops as you level up to 36.

Below: every plantation with its unlock level and cost, which Pals are best at planting, watering and ranching, how to speed it all up, and the server settings that change farm output. Everything comes from Pocketpair's patch notes, the official server docs and the game's own data files (version 1.0.x).
Last updated 9 October 2026. Checked against Palworld 1.0.5 (15 September 2026): the official patch notes, the official server docs and the game's data files. Older guides, ours included until this rewrite, named Pals and mechanics that the data does not support, so those are gone.
Palworld farming: plantations, the Ranch and the Breeding Farm
People say "farming" for three different buildings, and they do different things:
| Building | Unlock level | What it does | What it needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ranch | 5 | Produces items from Pals assigned to it. Vaelet drops seeds here. | Pals with Ranching suitability. Build cost: 30 Wood, 20 Stone, 30 Fiber |
| Plantations (one per crop) | 5 to 36 (table below) | Grow crops: Red Berries, Wheat, Tomato, Lettuce, Potato, Carrot, Onion. | A few Pals to plant seeds, water and harvest, according to the building text |
| Breeding Farm | 19 | Makes eggs, not items. Assign one male and one female Pal. | Cake has to be placed in the facility. Build cost: 10 Wooden Board, 20 Stone, 50 Fiber |
If your goal is "get seeds and early materials flowing", start with the Ranch. If your goal is food, build plantations. Eggs are a breeding topic, covered in our breeding combinations list.
Palworld planting: every plantation, its level and its cost
Each plantation has 3 of its own seeds in the build cost, so you need the seeds before you can place one. Unlock levels are the technology levels in the game data.
| Berry Plantation | 5 | 3 Berry Seeds, 10 Wood, 10 Stone | Quick to harvest, but berries do not feed Pals much. |
| Wheat Plantation | 15 | 3 Wheat Seeds, 15 Wood, 15 Stone | Average harvest time. Wheat goes to the Mill for Flour. |
| Tomato Plantation | 21 | 3 Tomato Seeds, 70 Wood, 50 Stone, 5 Aquatic Pal Fluids | Takes time to harvest; widens the meals you can cook. |
| Lettuce Plantation | 25 | 3 Lettuce Seeds, 100 Wood, 70 Stone, 10 Aquatic Pal Fluids | Takes time to harvest; widens the meals you can cook. |
| Potato Plantation | 29 | 3 Potato Seeds, 30 Wood, 20 Stone, 3 Aquatic Pal Fluids | Takes time to harvest; widens the meals you can cook. |
| Carrot Plantation | 32 | 3 Carrot Seeds, 30 Wood, 20 Stone, 1 Aquatic Pal Fluids | Takes time to harvest; widens the meals you can cook. |
| Onion Plantation | 36 | 3 Onion Seeds, 30 Wood, 20 Stone, 2 Aquatic Pal Fluids | Takes time to harvest; widens the meals you can cook. |

Where the seeds come from, according to the item descriptions in the data:
- Wheat Seeds, Lettuce Seeds and Tomato Seeds can be bought from a merchant.
- Berry Seeds drop when you pick Red Berries.
- Carrot, Onion and Potato Seeds are listed as "necessary for starting a farm", with no source given in the data, so I will not guess.
- Vaelet drops seeds while ranching (the 1.0 patch notes say so).
What to do with the crops: the Mill (level 15) turns Wheat into Flour, and it needs a Pal with Watering to spin the water turbine. The Cooking Pot (level 17) is needed for cooking and needs a Fire Pal to light it. A Feed Box (level 4, 20 Wood) stores food for your Pals to eat when they are hungry.
Best Pals for planting and watering
Work Suitability is a level per job; the highest in the Pal data is 8. These are the figures from the data. Variants (Noct, Lux, Ignis and so on) are separate Pals with their own numbers.
Planting
Level 5 and up: Dandilord (8), Lyleen (7), Ophydia (7), Carnibora (6), Mycora (6), Silvance (6), Braloha (5), Broncherry (5), Quivern Botan (5), Tropicaw (5).
Level 2: Beegarde (2), Bristla (2), Caprity (2), Caprity Noct (2), Cinnamoth (2), Flopie (2), Ribbuny Botan (2), Robinquill (2), Souffline (2).
Watering
Level 5 and up: Shaolong (8), Jormuntide (7), Neptilius (7), Faleris Aqua (6), Suzaku Aqua (6), Broncherry Aqua (5), Ghangler (5), Ghangler Ignis (5), Ophydia (5), Whalaska (5).
Level 2: Dumud (2), Dumud Gild (2), Finsider (2), Finsider Ignis (2), Fuack Ignis (2), Gloopie (2), Gloopie Primo (2), Gobfin (2), Jelliette (2), Jellroy (2), Munchill (2), Penking (2), Penking Lux (2), Skutlass Ignis (2), Turtacle (2), Turtacle Terra (2).
Harvesting is listed as a third job in the building text. The data files do not say which suitability it uses, so check a Pal's suitability list on its status screen before you assign it.
Raising a Pal's level
The data has one-use books for each job: Applied Planting Handbook I, Applied Watering Handbook I and Applied Ranching Handbook I. Each says that a Pal who reads it permanently gains +1 in that affinity. The 1.0 patch notes added the Ranching one, and also say a Pal's work suitability levels now go up as it ranks up.
Palworld farming Pals: the Ranch
The Ranch unlocks at level 5 and costs 30 Wood, 20 Stone, 30 Fiber. The 1.0 patch notes say ranch suitability was added to some Pals so early materials are easier to get, ranch output was increased and the default production interval changed. These Pals have Ranching suitability in the data, by level:
| Ranching level | Pals |
|---|---|
| 4 | Dumud Gild, Sibelyx Primo |
| 3 | Beegarde, Foxcicle, Shroomer, Sibelyx |
| 2 | Cremis, Melpaca, Mozzarina, Sootseer, Surfent, Vaelet |
| 1 | Caprity, Caprity Noct, Cawgnito, Chikipi, Depresso, Dumud, Flambelle, Kelpsea, Kelpsea Ignis, Lamball, Mau, Mau Cryst, Rooby, Sparkit, Vixy, Woolipop, Woolipop Terra |
What each Pal produces is not in the data files, so I am only stating what the patch notes say: Vaelet drops seeds (1.0), and a 1.0.3 fix mentions Alpha Surfent producing Leather at a Ranch.
One more boost: the 1.0 patch notes say Cinnamoth's Mysterious Scales partner skill raises the Farming Work Suitability level of all other base Pals by +1 while it is at your base (it does not stack). The description of the Applied Ranching Handbook calls the same suitability "Farming", so this boost is for the Ranch, not the plantations.
Speed up crops: Crop Knowledge and Harvest Knowledge research
The Pal Labor Research Lab (level 19, 30 Ingot, 30 Paldium Fragment) runs Pal research. Two lines of it are about farming. The numbers below are the effect values in the data; the unit is not given, so read the exact bonus on the research screen.
| Planting branch: Crop Knowledge Lv1 | Crop growth speed | 5 |
| Planting branch: Crop Knowledge Lv2 | Crop growth speed | 5 |
| Planting branch: Crop Knowledge Lv3 | Crop growth speed | 10 |
| Planting branch: Harvest Knowledge Lv1 | Harvest amount | 10 |
| Planting branch: Harvest Knowledge Lv2 | Harvest amount | 10 |
| Planting branch: Harvest Knowledge Lv3 | Harvest amount | 10 |
| Watering branch: Crop Knowledge Lv1 | Crop growth speed | 5 |
| Watering branch: Crop Knowledge Lv2 | Crop growth speed | 10 |
| Watering branch: Harvest Knowledge Lv1 | Harvest amount | 10 |
| Watering branch: Harvest Knowledge Lv2 | Harvest amount | 10 |

There are higher-tier farm buildings too: the Skillfruit Orchard (level 71) grows Skillfruits from an original fruit, and the Ancient Farm (level 78) is a smaller plantation for indoor use that wants Pals with high Planting, Watering and Harvesting suitability.
Farming on your own server
If you run a world for friends, the official server docs list a setting for the Ranch: MonsterFarmActionSpeedRate, "item production speed multiplier from grazing". The 1.0 patch notes also say the time ranch items take can be changed in World Settings. Where to change settings is in our guide to changing your Palworld server settings. Setting up a world from scratch is in our Palworld server guide, and if you would rather not keep a PC on all day you can rent a Palworld server and edit the same settings there.
Palworld Farming FAQ
How do I start farming in Palworld?
Unlock the Berry Plantation or Wheat Plantation (levels 5 and 15), get the seeds (Berry Seeds drop from Red Berries, Wheat Seeds can be bought), build the plantation and assign Pals with Planting and Watering. Each plantation needs 3 seeds in its build cost.
Which Pals can plant and water crops?
Dandilord has the highest Planting level in the data (8) and Shaolong the highest Watering level (8). The lists above show every Pal at level 5 or higher, plus level 2 options.
How do I get seeds?
Wheat, Lettuce and Tomato Seeds can be bought from a merchant, Berry Seeds drop when you pick Red Berries, and Vaelet drops seeds at a Ranch. The data gives no source for Carrot, Onion and Potato Seeds.
What is the difference between the Ranch and a plantation?
A plantation grows crops from seeds and needs planting, watering and harvesting. The Ranch makes items from a Pal with Ranching suitability, with no seeds involved.
Can I make farming faster?
Yes: Crop Knowledge and Harvest Knowledge research at the Pal Labor Research Lab, higher Work Suitability levels (handbooks, Pal rank-ups) and, on your own server, MonsterFarmActionSpeedRate for the Ranch.
